Sewer Line Repair Services and Alternatives in Utah
A sewer line rarely fails all at once. It starts with a slow drain, a smell you can’t place, or a clog that keeps coming back. At Restore Pipe Systems, we’ve seen all kinds of sewer issues, from improper installation to improper use and everything in between. Sewer line repair services come down to three options:
- Line it with cured in-place pipe (CIPP): The pipe is rebuilt from the inside, with no trench across the yard.
- Instead, use a pipe buster: pull a new line through the old one using two small pits.
- Dig it with traditional excavation: for jobs where nothing else works.

How We Find the Problem Before Any Repair Starts
Nobody should pay for a repair based on a guess. A sewer camera inspection goes down the line first.
The camera shows the pipe from the inside. Where the crack sits, how far roots have travelled, and whether a section has sagged or pulled apart at a joint. That footage picks the repair method, and you see it too. One bad joint twenty feet out is a different job than a clay line failing from end to end. No plumber can tell the difference just by looking at it from the surface.

How It Works
How Sewer Line Repair Works
Every repair follows the same path, from the first camera pass to the last one.
01
Find the Problem With a Camera
Nobody should pay for a repair based on a guess. A sewer camera inspection goes down the line first and shows the pipe from the inside: where the crack sits, how far roots have travelled, and whether a section has sagged or pulled apart. No plumber can see that from the surface.
02
Clean the Line
Before lining, the pipe has to be clean, because resin won’t bond to scale, grease, or root hair. The drain cleaning crew clears the line with hydro jetting, cable cleaning, or robotic cutting, depending on what the camera found. A clean pipe gives the liner a solid surface to grip.
03
Choose the Repair Method
The camera footage decides, and you see it too. One bad joint twenty feet out is a different job than a clay line failing from end to end. Intact pipe walls with cracks, roots, or corrosion usually suit CIPP lining. A collapsed, flattened, or undersized line calls for pipe bursting.
04
Repair or Replace the Pipe
The crew lines the old pipe or bursts a new one into place, working through cleanouts or two small pits. Most jobs end up as lining or bursting. Traditional excavation is the fallback, used only when the damage is beyond what either trenchless method can handle. Each method is explained below.
05
Confirm the Finished Work
A final camera pass confirms the finished work, so you see the result the same way you saw the problem. You see the new lining or pipe on screen instead of relying on anyone’s word. If something doesn’t look right, it gets caught while the crew is still on site.

Signs Your Sewer Line Needs Repair
Sewer line problems show up long before a backup occurs. Catching them early is what turns a small plumbing problem into a major one.
- Slow draining in more than one location: If the toilet makes a noise when the washing machine empties, it's likely because of a blockage in the main line and not the fixture.
- A sewer smell indoors: This smell is usually strongest in the basement or near a floor drain.
- Wet ground or patchy green in the garden: Wastewater leaking from a cracked lateral feeds the grass above it.
- Clogs that keep coming back: If a drain reclogs a few weeks after each cleaning, that indicates something structural.
- Gurgling or backing up can happen after heavy rain: groundwater finding its way in through cracks and open joints.
Tree roots can cause several problems in older Utah neighborhoods. They find a hairline crack or loose joint and then grow toward the water inside. After decades underground, cast iron and clay laterals develop normal openings.
Your Sewer Line Repair Options
Both trenchless methods leave your landscaping, driveway, and parking lot right where you want them. CIPP lining rebuilds the pipe from the inside, and pipe bursting pulls a new one through the old. Here’s how they stack up against the old way.

How Each Sewer Line Repair Option Works
Not every damaged pipe needs the same fix. Below, you’ll see what each method repairs, what the work involves, and when it makes the most sense for your sewer line.
CIPP Lining: A New Pipe Inside the Old One
An epoxy-soaked sleeve goes into your sewer line, inflates against the walls, and hardens into a new pipe. The old line stays put, and so does your yard.
- Repairs cracks, breaks, offset joints, pinholes, root damage, leaks, and corrosion
- Each liner is sized to your pipe and meets ASTM F1216
- Goes in through one or two existing openings, with little or no digging

Pipe Bursting: Replacing a Line That's Past Saving
When a pipe has collapsed or is too small, it can no longer be lined. Pipe bursting pulls a new pipe through the old one and breaks the old pipe apart as it goes.
- Needs only two small pits, one at each end of the line
- Works on cast iron, clay, transite, cement, and ductile iron
- Can upgrade you to a bigger pipe, such as 4″ to 6″
- Can split one shared line so each house gets its own
- Can cost less than CIPP in some cases

Traditional Excavation
Digging used to be the only option. Now it’s the fallback, not the default.
- Used when a line cracked under a slab sits too shallow for trenchless repair
- A backhoe digs a trench down to the damaged pipe, which is replaced and backfilled
- Indoors, it can mean cutting through floors and opening up walls

Why are your drivers (company trucks) running STOP signs in residential neighborhoods with children present? This happened at 4:55 PM Saturday March 28th 2026 in Mendon, Utah. Driver was in a white shirt and tie headed to the church of Jesus Christ latter-day Saints If I see your company trucks running the stop sign in my neighborhood again I’m turning that license plate into the police ! Scott is the man!! We had been dealing with low water pressure for a month. After talking to the city twice and a visit from a plumber. We were referred to excavation companies to dig up our front yard. After finding out the cost of excavation, I decided to call Restore Pipe Systems. Scott showed up the same day and took a look at our valves, and water tank. He got those broken items replaced in no time and contacted the city for me. He stayed and told them what he had found. It was not a pipe in my yard after all, but we had low flow from the city. I felt so relieved of stress, less money out of my pocket, the job was done and we're back to full pressure showers again! Thank you Scott! Restore Pipe Systems will be my go to from here on out.Posted on Google![]()

A diamond pendant that belonged to my mom fell off the chain and into my sink; it was a family heirloom. My granddaughter has worn it for special occasions, proms, graduation photos, etc. We were heartbroken and sick!! Restore Pipe Systems was referred to me by a friend, thank goodness! Scott came out; he located it in 10 mins at no charge! What a fantastic company, so kind and compassionate!! Thanks again, Scott!
Here's Why Our Clients Love Us!
Three reasons people call back and send their neighbors.
Trenchless work means no digging, no hauling away, and no rebuilding. That’s where the bulk of the schedule is on a standard repair.
Because we dig very little, you avoid the costs of replacing large areas of landscaping or concrete, as well as the cleanup of the bigger mess that traditional pipe replacement can create.
Most lines are changed with little or no digging, or simply two holes: one entrance pit and one exit pit.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a sewer line usually last?
Material matters more than age, and the types of sewer pipe in the ground vary by neighborhood. Clay and cast-iron laterals from the middle of the last century are the ones most likely to be failing now, through corrosion, roots, or joints pulling apart as ground shifts. Orangeburg goes sooner; newer PVC holds up longer. A camera inspection gives you a real answer instead of an average.
What affects the cost of sewer line repair?
Length and depth drive most of it. A short spot repair near the house is a different job than a full sewer replacement that goes all the way out to the city main. After that, how deep the lateral sits, whether crews reach it through existing cleanouts or dig access pits, and what the old pipe is made of all affect the cost. Heavy cleaning adds to it, and so does crossing a driveway, a slab, or a city right of way.
Does homeowners insurance cover sewer line repair?
Often it doesn’t, and that catches people off guard. Standard home insurance policies frequently leave sewer line repair out. Some insurers offer a water or sewer backup add-on, and stand-alone sewer line policies exist, though what they cover varies by provider. Check your policy wording, or ask your carrier about the lateral running from your house to the main.
Who is responsible for the sewer line, me or the city?
In most places, the property owner owns the lateral, which is the line running from the building out to the city sewer main. The city owns the public sewer system itself, so a break on your side of that connection is your bill. Rules vary between Utah municipalities, and a few offer assistance programs, so it’s best to check with your city rather than assume.
Can you repair a sewer line under a driveway, slab, or parking lot?
Usually, yes, and that’s the main reason trenchless methods exist. CIPP lining works through existing access points like cleanouts and vent stacks, so the concrete above stays put. A pipe bursting replacement needs two small pits, which often go on either side of a driveway rather than through it. For apartment and commercial properties, that means fewer parking spaces out of service and less disruption for a building you manage.
Is trenchless repair a good fit for older Utah homes?
Usually. Houses built fifty or sixty years ago tend to have cast iron or clay laterals, and both take CIPP lining well as long as the shape holds. Cast iron corrodes from the inside and turns rough, which slows flow and catches debris. A liner restores a smooth interior without opening the yard. Collapsed clay is the exception, and that’s where pipe bursting comes in.
Find Out What Your Sewer Line Actually Needs
The guessing is the expensive part. Send a camera down the line, watch the footage, and you’ll know whether it’s a spot repair or the complete run. That’s the whole first step. No digging, no commitment.
