A Short History of Little America Hotel
In the event you have ever visited Salt Lake City, then you probably know about Little America Hotel, that is one of those aged-old landmarks that people can instantly identify. The property was established in the early seventies and was immediately recognized due to its traditional design, massive rooms and the type of hospitality that makes the guests come back again and again.
The hotel has an excess of over 800 rooms, several restaurants, and is a 24-hour establishment, which means that the hotel just cannot spare plumbing issues. Even a few hours of down time may affect guests, events and routine operations. This is why it is so significant to keep the infrastructure that is behind the scenes, i.e., the sewer lines, in such a good condition.
The Challenge: Commercial Sewer Issues at Little America Hotel
The employees of the hotel started noticing the slowness of the drains and the indicators of a more severe problem that is going on below the ground. Their 8-inch concrete sewer main after further inspection proved to have multiple issues simultaneously:
- Weak and dysfunctional pipe joints.
- Debris and obstructions
- Pieces of pipes broken or collapsed
- Increasing risk of backups
This sort of damage would ordinarily involve trench digging, which is the last thing you want in front of a hotel where guests come and leave all day long. Noisy work, construction equipment… not an option.
They had to find a solution that would result in minimal disruption to the daily activities at the hotel and should be wrapped up much quicker than traditional sewer line replacement.
The Solution: Cured-in-Place Pipe Lining (CIPP) in Salt Lake City
Given the fact that minimizing disruptions to a minimum was of prime importance to the client, we decides to opt for Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining which essentially allows us to install a brand new pipe within the old damaged pipe itself. While this process requires no digging or excavation, because the client’s sewer pipe had collapsed across multiple points, we had to undertake some excavation to remove these cracked pipes. While our trenchless CIPP and trenchless pipe bursting solutions do not necessitate digging, we still carry full capability to excavate when the situation calls for it, like the one we faced at the Little America Hotel.
The minimal excavation combined with CIPP was a perfect fit to this job because:
- CIPP was done via the available portals, without the need for any digging.
- Some excavation done at the property, as shown in the pictures, was purely due to the collapsed pipes underground that had to be cleared. We carry the capability to excavate when it’s unavoidable.
- Super quick turnaround. It took us only two days to complete the whole 330 foot repair.
- Stronger than before. The new liner creates a seamless smooth pipe which will not crack, rust or allow roots to enter it.
- We employed the Schwalm robot to cut out 40 pieces of mortar that was left in the pipe during the installation. Some of them were 2″ tall across the bottom 1/3 and some as long as 4″.
- Guests never noticed a thing. The hotel remained in full operation.
- In a commercial property, which is operating round the clock, such a no-dig solution is the difference between day and night.
